Tongue Paralysis after Orotracheal Intubation in a Patient with Primary Mediastinal Tumor

چکیده
Hypoglossal nerve injury is a very rare complication of anaesthesia airway management. The cause argued to this lesion is neuropathy of this nerve provoked by its compression due to inflation of the cuff within the larynx or damage secondary to hyperextension of the neck during a difficult intubation. Although most cases describe Tapia ́s syndrome with hypoglossus and recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, the cases which describe only bilateral hypoglossus palsy are very unfrequent. We report here a case of bilateral palsy of hypoglossus nerves in a 28-year-old man undergoing a diagnostic anterior mediastinotomy as a part of the study of a mediastinal mass.

Tongue paralysis after orotracheal intubation in a patient with primary mediastinal tumor: a case report
INTRODUCTION Several lesions have been described as post-intubation complications. Most frequent are injuries of the pharynx/larynx or trachea. Cranial nerve injury following routine endo-tracheal intubation appears to be rare, and most reports describe Tapia's syndrome with hypoglossus/recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis; cases that describe only bilateral hypoglossus palsy are infrequent. The...
متن کاملMediastinal Neuroendocrine Carcinoma of Unknown Origin Presenting with Superior Vena Cava Syndrome (SVCS): A Case Report
Primary neuroendocrine carcinoma (NEC) of the mediastinum is a rare type of carcinoma. According to the literature, only five cases of this condition have been reported so far. In this paper, we present a rare case of mediastinal NEC of unknown primary site. The patient was a 34-year-old man with mediastinal NEC, who presented with chronic dry cough and a right-sided mediastinal mass one year p...
متن کاملProphylactic Effects of Lidocaine or Beclomethasone Spray on Post-Operative sore Throat and Cough after Orotracheal Intubation
Introduction: Post-operative sore throat and cough are common complications of endotracheal intubation. These conditions may be very distressing for the patient and may lead to unpleasant memories. This study was performed in order to determine whether beclomethasone and lidocaine spray could reduce the frequency of post-operative sore throat and hoarseness after tracheal extubation. Materials...
متن کاملRemifentanil for sedation and analgesia during awake division of tongue flap in children: a report of two cases
Background The tongue flap is an accepted treatment method for cleft palate repair. Orotracheal or nasotracheal intubation using a fiberoptic scope is preferred for the division of the tongue flap. We report two cases of tongue flap division in which the patients received adequate sedation and analgesia without tracheal intubation. Case presentation Twelve- and 13-year-old male patients were ...
متن کاملAirway obstruction by a metastatic mediastinal tumor during anesthesia.
A case of low back pain syndrome was diagnosed due to spinal metastasis with unknown primary origin. During anesthesia for surgical stabilization, unexpected airway obstruction occurred after endotracheal intubation. Fiber-optic bronchoscopic examination showed narrowing of the trachea and main bronchi caused by extrinsic compression. After administration of neostigmine to reverse neuromuscular...
